 What is Bowen?

The Bowen Technique is different from many other forms of therapy and it is first and foremost a remedial therapy.

The therapist makes a series of moves across muscles and tendons with the aim of disturbing the tissues and giving the body a chance to resolve its own problems.

 The History of Bowen

The Bowen Technique was developed by Mr Tom Bowen a labourer who lived and worked in Geelong in Australia. Mr Bowen started out by treating work colleagues with small simple moves to good effect and with some remarkable results.

Word spread about the Technique and Mr Bowen was soon a busy man, working on people, racehorses and greyhounds. He taught his technique to a few people over the years, some of whom brought the Technique to Europe and the UK and founded the European College of Bowen Studies.

 What's in a treatment?

The Bowen Technique can be used to treat people of all ages from newborn babies to the elderly, and it is the person that is treated, NOT the specific condition.

Bowen is an holistic therapy, treating the body as a whole without reference to any specific disease or condition.

During a treatment the therapist will make small moves across muscles and tendons with short breaks between each set of moves. Most of the moves can be performed through loose, light clothing.

There is no manipulation, force, massage or deep pressure involved and no oils or other equipment is used.
